This past 5-6 weeks has been fraught with many global

problems with the Internet, as well as viewing what the fury

of Mother Nature can do to even online businesses. Because

Waybill has been so hard-hit with the backlashes of Web

worms and viruses, as well as the fury of the hurricane on

the east coast, I thought now was the time to send out a

"Care Package" to you, my readers. There ARE things you

can do to protect yourself in your computing environment.

This issue has advice about many tools you can get for

fr^ee.

About 3 weeks ago, while working with the (almost done!

ready to send you news in a few days!) Guide To Treasure

In Colorado... I discovered that the database for Waybill was

NOT functioning. In fact, it appeared that it had not been

functioning for a few weeks. After *severe* discussions with

the host, we then discovered that scripts and filters they'd

applied had corrupted not just my database, but any

client/business on that particular server. If this were the

'big boy' corporate world, this would be grounds for lawsuit,

as it so badly affected our sales.

If you have visited the Book Store lately (not the past two

weeks; it is functioning fine now) and attempted to place an

order, and ran into the way it was acting... which was, you

click and it sent you straight back to the home page. There

was no hope of viewing single pages, or making a purchase.

Please consider returning to our Book Store to complete your

purchase. The host's problems severely affected our sales,

and it's going to be tough to weather things through.... The

To be very honest, I don't hold any hard feelings, as they

were good hosts up until this recent unleashing of

destructive worms, world wide, as well as the mounting

problems of HUGE spam all over the Net. The scripts that

corrupted my database were the very ones that the host

had used, trying to stem the problems of worms and spam.

Like all other ISPs and hosts out there... they are trying.

This just had a nasty backlash.

Anyway, upon discovering what had gone on, I initiated a

move in hosts, and returned to the host I had prior. It took

several very hard days to move 57 domain names! I also

moved all sites related to Waybill to a host in Vancouver,

based on how efficient his List Mail software it. This turned

out to be the best blessing of all.

For the other domains, which are mostly my educational

and graphics/web design sites, the host is in ... Virginia.

Yes... four days after the move, the hurricane hit! So, the

sites were down for another 4-5 days. However, I made

the decision to place them all with the Vancouver host,

as it became apparent that even in the Internet settings,

it all comes down to location, location! "Vancouver's" data

centers are now all in mid-Texas - land-locked and not

prone to oceanic tempest. So, let's all hope and pray for

no TX tornadoes, earthquake, pestilence, or?!

This is an ever-changing and still unstable environment, for

business and for personal pleasure and research/surfing.

Whenever I come upon new tools that will help you, I will

send them right along. If you allow me to work with you,

I know that my 9 years of Net experience will help you in

your daily surfing, your research, and much more.

DO WE REALLY NEED THE INTERNET?

As someone who earns their living entirely online, I

considered myself the last person I ever thought would ask

the question, "Do we really need the Internet?"

However, the extended power outage of almost 4 days,

ongoing loss of Internet access, combined with many other

events surrounding the recent Hurricane Isabel caused me to

reassess my priorities.

When "high-tech" business gets into a head-on collision with

a natural or man-made disaster, we all need to ask, "Do we

really need the Internet?"

Well, when you're in line for 3 hours to get gas so you can

siphon the tank to run your father-in-law's generator in

order to save $1,000 worth of food in three freezers - you

don't need the Internet, you need the expectation that

you'll find gas.

When you're driving around for 2 hours trying to find ice so

you can have a cold drink and make your family more

comfortable on a 90+ degree day - you don't need the

Internet, you need patience and a sense of humor.

When a good friend of yours falls 30 feet off a ladder while

helping his neighbors cut a tree off their house, fractures

his back and neck, punctures a lung and must be airlifted to

the hospital in critical condition - you don't need the

Internet, you need faith he'll be okay!

When the hurricane's destruction threatens to ruin the

surprise 50th wedding anniversary party you've been planning

for over a year for your parents - you don't need the

Internet! You improvise and set up a human communication

network that spreads the word to dozens of people who still

show up and throw a party that creates memories that will

last a lifetime!

When you can't turn on your computer to get work done, you

can still grab a good old-fashioned pen and legal pad and

get more work done in the peace and quiet without phones,

fax or email to distract you than you could ever get done

when things get back to "normal."

It struck me last night as I struggled to get my high-speed

Internet connection going again that I was much more

stressed over getting a stupid piece of hardware to function

than I was over driving 50+ miles to find gas just two days

before!

In fact, looking back, I was more proud of the fact that on

Saturday I found what was probably the last cold six pack of

beer in all of Southeastern Virginia than I was about my

last successful online product launch!

And after spending many days and nights in the dark, I

realized that the Internet represents the ultimate

convenience, but it's also the ultimate business risk

because so much can happen to shut the Internet down or

prevent you from accessing it.

If recent events taught me anything, they taught me these

three truths about life:

1. Life is fragile and valuable - don't take it for granted.

2. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being

of family and friends. Sometimes it takes a calamity to

remind us.

3. Anyone who depends on the Internet for their entire

livelihood should seek to diversify how they make their

money - just in case the Internet disappears one day when

you least expect it!

Why so late, you ask? As a developer, I work in version 4.0,

BEWARE OF URBAN MYTHS...

THE FILE YOU DESTROY MAY BE ESSENTIAL

Many of you may have received, or will receive in the future,

an E-Mail with a very disturbing message about a lurking virus

on your PC. It will read very much like this one, sent to me by

a concerned Waybill reader. Please read to the end of the

sample and also what the real truth is, or you may, unaware,

delete a file that is essential to your machine. To me, this is

the ugliest form of hoax. No, it's not a virus. It's a MEAN TRICK

to get you to fire up your best intentions for your own safety

and the safety of those on your list... and have YOU do the

dirty work of sabotage on your own machine. Here is the

sample E-Mail:

A virus has been passed onto me by a contact. My

address book WAS infected. Since you are in my

address book, there is a good chance you will find

it in your computer, too.

The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is NOT detected by

Norton or McAfee Anti-virus systems. It sits quietly

for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent

automatically by messenger and by the address

book, whether or not you sent Emails to your

contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and

how to get rid of it:

It's quick and easy to get rid of. YOU MUST

DO THIS:

Go to Start, Find or Search Option.
In the file/folder option, type the name
jdbgmgr.exe
Be sure you search your C:drive and all
sub-folders and any other drives you may
have.
Click "find now"
The virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the
name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT!
Go to Edit on the menu bar, <snipped...>
Go to File on the menu bar and <snipped...>
If you find the virus, you must
contact all the people in your
address book, so they can eradicate
it in their own address books.

Number 8, above, is the JOY these hackers

get from doing things like this. It clogs up

the mail systems. It causes people to do

self-destructive things. NO NEED to send

out a virus if unsuspecting folks fall prey

to a dirty trick like this!

Now, the REALITY here is that this is a hoax... an Urban

Legend, as it goes 'round and 'round, and if you spend any

time on the Net, you will see this come around quite often.

If EVER there is a doubt in your mind about an E-Mail you

receive... or even if there isn't a doubt... Please, PLEASE

check things out first, before you go following directions to

delete something from your machine. If your virus software

didn't tell you so, then consider it suspect before you

DO A THING.

This was the frenzied letter I wrote back to him:

Whoa!!!!!!! The teddy bear virus is a hoax. If you

haven't done anything, DON'T! that file is part of your

ability to use Java. This, in itself, with folks deleting it,

is an inside-out hackers trick. In other words, you

delete something you NEED ... what a nasty trick. Go

to the urban myths sites.....

But it was too late as he'd deleted the file. Luckily it didn't

create too many problems, but for a friend in California, it

surely did. She spent more than a week and more than she

wants to admit in payment to a local techie, to fix things

affected by her removal of "Teddy Bear."

For your own safety, keep this E-Mail on hand, or bookmark

the Urbanlegends.com Web site, as it will save you a LOT of

time, not to mention it will help keep the overload of mail

circling 'round and 'round, as people pass on letters that

have no basis in fact.

Two hunters got a pilot to fly them into the far north

for elk hunting. They were quite successful in their

venture and bagged six big bucks. The pilot came

back, as arranged, to pick them up.

They started loading their gear into the plane,

including the six elk. But the pilot objected and he

said, 'The plane can only take four of your elk; you

will have to leave two behind.'

They argued with him; the year before they had shot

six and the pilot had allowed them to put all aboard.

The plane was the same model and capacity.

Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put

all six aboard. But when the attempted to take off

and leave the valley, the little plane could not make

it and they crashed into the wilderness.

Climbing out of the wreckage, one hunter said to

the other, 'Do you know where we are?' 'I think so,'

replied the other hunter. I think this is about the

same place where we landed last year!'

north-east U.S. and parts of Canada during that black-out.

almost looks like "The Day After" (did you ever see that TV

movie back in the early 80s?) ... and post-A-bomb, there is

a huge inland sea! oops!

Today, I learned that Johnny Cash had died

Sad at the news, but happy that I saw him play

The man on stage that Seattle night, at the Moore Theater

Twanging out tunes on “Burning Ring of Fire”

Down, down, down and the cheers went higher

The crowd was into it

This guy knew how to play and not just his guitar

The audience, most, dressed in black like he

The spots of light, he soaked up in his black attire

Yes, he stopped in the middle of a set, joking back and forth

Pleased all that were there, I hear that train a coming

Its coming round the bend

The smokestacks are puffing as Johnny belts out another and another

Now there is no more smoke, but the train keeps rolling down the track

Into the hearts and minds of those who were there

To continue on

With Johnny at the controls of his engine
