A Glimpse Into Internet Research
USING All That Crass Commercialism!!
~ by Leanne Boyd
Let's talk about the to-die-for (I LOVE the old trains!)
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for just a
second, here. Many of you will know exactly what I am talking about, and many more of
you, most likely will never have heard about this ''modern'' miracle of the
1800's.
This Resource turned out to be a perfect example of the methods I've learned, through 8 years of Internet travel and research, and three degree programs. It's sort of a very qualified Hit-and-Miss method, by the way. BUT, it is also highly effective. I think you will quickly see that the hardest part is in selecting good keywords in a Search Engine search, and ferreting out from the links the search brings back ... the best pages to view. Once you have found an excellent page for whatever YOUR reasons are, for believing it to be an excellent page (my initial page was important to me, simply for the PICTURES, and not so much the content). So, bear with me, and make sure to visit each link IN ORDER ... and I am fairly certain this is going to help you with your next project and research, using the Internet. This small tutorial is going to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that even the crass commercial methods used by today's ''marketing gurus'' are TO YOUR BENEFIT! (Are you SICK of these popups, or what?? Do they ever have anything that you want?? Well, hold on to the seat of your pants, because I'm here to tell you: YES, they do! But not what they put the ad together for!!) Here's where I started (dummy, me) ... Go and run a search on your favorite engine ( Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves), and use these keywords: ''Alamosa San Juan gold treasure.'' (Or, substitute ''Mt. Blanca'' or ''Colorado'' for Alamosa it'll be the same can o'worms.) After this brings back several thousand pages, you may return here to shoot me off an email, yelling about how much work this would be :-)) So, why, you ask, did I say ''dummy me''? If there is anything you take away from this short lesson, it is this: Here's the short of it ... when you go asking the engines about the State of Colorado and all its GOLD and MINES and MOUNTAINS, that is what you will get! A MOUNTAIN of everything there is on the Net, having to do with one of the most fascinating bits of Americana there is! But, once you start adding in more specific keywords, then you will start getting more specific pages. To see how I arrived at a page that I feel is highly valuable in this research on Alamosa Gold, and how the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad fits in with it. How does my first landing page essentially a promo page for a small business on FortuneCity.com become the essence of a very sound research? Here's how it went ... read on for the tutorial ... |

Resource 1:
Treasure in the San Luis Valley:
The Golden Horde, part II
~ Synopsis by Leanne Boyd
The article's author, Christopher O'Brien, cautions: "Search these
vast areas hard and deep enough and you may be surprised at what
you'll find, but I suggest you tread lightly ..." This writing is
cram-packed with the stories of the San Luis Valley, from the
relationships of French and Indians and ill-fated groups from every
point of the compass. Stories of caves and skeletons, sabotage and
mayhem. Treasures found and lost, re-found and then lost again.
O'Brien goes into Colorado's rather unique laws on ''treasure rights''
and then asks the reader: ''Colorado has an interesting series of
'treasure rights,' which can be obtained for the right to look,
find and keep treasure found in specific deeded locations. I couldn't
help but wonder, who owned the treasure rights for the area around the
Dead Man's Treasure?''
One of the most alluring portions of this article is the extensive list of
''potentials'' ... the areas that history, legend, and lore attribute
with the spine-tinglers of Colorado Gold Days. Don't miss these lists
... from Huerfano/Spanish Peaks region, to the southern, New Mexican
part of the San Luis Valley, to the central and northern San Luis Valley.
The author calls this region, ''The Mysterious Valley.'' Being from
Colorado, myself, I tend to agree. Many visits throughout my lifetime
mostly to the Great Sand Dunes, that great sand pile vacation for kids!
have born out the fact that the entire valley is so steeped in the legends,
it is palpable and vibrant ... there are whispers on every small rush
of the wind ...

For this review, I listed Part II of The Golden Horde article FIRST, as it is so specific to the topics of Spanish gold, lost mines, and lost treasures of the San Luis Valley. However, Part I also has some major clues and discussion ... much having to do with the centuries of mystery that many have attributed, in modern days ... to alien visitation. O'Brien states:
''Blessed (or cursed?) with a life-long fascination with the so-called 'thrill of discovery,' I too, have always been enamored by the thought of finding treasure of any kind. Many of you, I'm sure, can relate to this. I confess, it doesn't matter if it's precious stones, Native American artifacts, gem-quality vertebrae fossils, meteorites or precious minerals, I have always been fascinated by the concept of discovering the many fabulous treasures contained on our planet. When this amateur fossil-hunter and wannabe prospector moved out West from the East Coast in 1989, little did he know he was moving to one of this country's legendary treasure locales.''

Visitors to the San Luis Valley
in the winter time probably found out
REAL quickly why the Indian nation would not go there, in the snow and ice
months. Many who died in the frozen land there, probably had new insight
into the phrase, ''until Hell freezes over'' !!

Full Listing of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
of Colorado and New Mexico
~ Synopsis by Leanne Boyd
|
If you are looking for a real meat-and-potatoes listing of Colorado
and New Mexico mountains, this IS the source. I use this site a lot,
just in general research of mines, maps, and towns of yesteryear. They
have a broad selection that includes the State Parks, the Wildlife areas,
and Colorado's 100 highest mountains. This OF COURSE includes ANY mining
or lost-treasure area you are researching. The relief maps section for
both Colorado and New Mexico are particularly interesting to me ... sometimes you
can tie together bits of a story, with actual topography on the map.
This site can keep you busy for hours. If you are researching anything from
the northern Colorado ranges, to the Four-Corners area, this particular
section of sangres.com has major info for you. The breakdown by not
only county, but by particular locations (cities, passes, wonders of nature,
even a golf course or two!) is infinitely helpful in knitting together things
mentioned in stories and lore.
For the serious researcher of mines and lost treasure in the San Luis Valley,
don't miss this valuable resource! (click for
