2. Mount Blanca, Colorado Yesterday's Whispers And Legends
   ~ by Glenn Carson

It's easy for some of us to dwell on the subject of Colorado and its vast treasures. Monumental ranges of mountains rise above so many lost and hidden tales ... there are valleys, caves, clues, legends, whispers, and all the excitement of potentials and possibilities that lie hidden in one of those hard-to-get-to spots.

The faded Maltese cross that perhaps can still be seen in that cave high in the Sangre de Cristos, and the multitude of hamlets with Spanish names all speak of conquistadores, gold, and conquest.

Tales of lost gold mines, lost and then found again, of ledges of high grade silver ore discovered by ignorant wanderers who then could not relocate the spots. Bandits, thieves, hermits, Indians, and cowboys have all left their mark in any study of Colorado treasures.

Robberies from stages, caravans, and trains begin many a Colorado treasure tale! There are stories of hog farmers, wheat ranchers, cattle drivers, mountain men stories that make you want to drop what you are doing and head up into that one particular high valley ... what was the name of that great peak that loomed above it all? Such a bland name for being at the core of so many hair-raising stories!

Is it any surprise that we dwell on Alamosa and some of the other fascinating areas of the Mile High state? Does it surprise you that yesterday's whispers and legends, the merest snippets of information, can lead to treasures in that rugged country?

Plan well, if you mean to search this land, for the same early blizzards and deep snows that shut down operations for some early adventurers can compound problems and perils for the adventurers of today!

It's a problem, sitting on a pile of crude gold bars with snow up to your eyeballs, and no way to get yourself let alone the gold out of such a place!

Ahhh... you say. To HAVE such problems.

~ Glenn

[[ Sidebar: Playing It Smart!  Play With A Major Player! ]]

Creative eBay Selling a simple email with a powerful message. A recent best selling book titled ''Future Consumer: The Webolution of Shopping to 2010'' states that there will be FIVE major players on the Internet in the year 2010. These FIVE websites will dominate the landscape of online consumer spending.

eBay.com is on that list.

This means you need to get your business onto eBay NOW. That's where the customers are, and that's where they'll be tomorrow. With 42 million members, 1.5 billion page views per month, and over 9,000 new users registering every day that is a TON of traffic swimming around on eBay!

I've sold for years on eBay mostly collectibles and hand-painted/crafted items. But now that Waybill is finally up and going, I've turned my attention to one of the best and largest target audiences in the world. I'm setting things up right now ... the market is HUGE for information, out there!

My suggestion to you, the Waybill family, is to READ THIS BOOK mentioned in this article ... it has made an astounding difference in how I view eBay, even after working with auctions for many years, and even with my 8 years as a Web design professional that particular technology knowledge had little to do with learning marketing or auctions.

Cut to the quick; watch out for the hype. But investigate finding YOUR TREASURE online. Our books, for over 30 years, have talked about this. The ''trash''-to-treasure outlook on life. TREASURE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT :-))

Our tough economic times almost demand that you find this extra stream of income. I've been on an intense marketing study for several years, now. My goal, with our growing group of the Adventure family, is to let you KNOW when I find such excellent tools. For MANY of you, this will be the difference in the upcoming turbulent times ...

It ALL can begin with eBay... Find out more here.

3. Upon Close Inspection
San Luis Valley's Claim To Fame:
    The Famous San Luis Valley
The ''Gold To Railroads Search Engine Tactics'' Tutorial, And...
    A Glimpse Into Internet Research
    USING All That Crass Commercialism!!
    ~ by Leanne Boyd

Let's talk about the to-die-for (I LOVE the old trains!) Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for just a second, here. Many of you will know exactly what I am talking about, and many more of you, most likely will never have heard about this ''modern'' miracle of the 1800's.

This Resource turned out to be a perfect example of the methods I've learned, through 8 years of Internet travel and research, and three degree programs. It's sort of a very qualified Hit-and-Miss method, by the way. BUT, it is also highly effective. I think you will quickly see that the hardest part is in selecting good keywords in a Search Engine search, and ferreting out from the links the search brings back ... the best pages to view.

Once you have found an excellent page for whatever YOUR reasons are, for believing it to be an excellent page (my initial page was important to me, simply for the PICTURES, and not so much the content).

So, bear with me, and make sure to visit each link IN ORDER ... and I am fairly certain this is going to help you with your next project and research, using the Internet. This small tutorial is going to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that even the crass commercial methods used by today's ''marketing gurus'' are TO YOUR BENEFIT! (Are you SICK of these popups, or what?? Do they ever have anything that you want?? Well, hold on to the seat of your pants, because I'm here to tell you: YES, they do! But not what they put the ad together for!!)

Here's where I started (dummy, me) ... Go and run a search on your favorite engine ( Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves), and use these keywords: ''Alamosa San Juan gold treasure.'' (Or, substitute ''Mt. Blanca'' or ''Colorado'' for Alamosa it'll be the same can o'worms.)

After this brings back several thousand pages, you may return here to shoot me off an email, yelling about how much work this would be :-))

So, why, you ask, did I say ''dummy me''?

If there is anything you take away from this short lesson, it is this:

              KITS.   Keep It Target-SPECIFIC.

Here's the short of it ... when you go asking the engines about the State of Colorado and all its GOLD and MINES and MOUNTAINS, that is what you will get! A MOUNTAIN of everything there is on the Net, having to do with one of the most fascinating bits of Americana there is! But, once you start adding in more specific keywords, then you will start getting more specific pages.

To see how I arrived at a page that I feel is highly valuable in this research on Alamosa Gold, and how the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad fits in with it. How does my first landing page essentially a promo page for a small business on FortuneCity.com become the essence of a very sound research? Here's how it went ... read on for the tutorial ...

    COLORADO TREASURE TALES

By W.C. Jameson. This has 191 pages, and 4 very good maps. Since the beginning of recorded history, tales of lost mines and buried and sunken treasures have held an incredible fascination and appeal for many people. Reading about or searching for a lost mine or treasure excites men and women, young and old.

The great state of Colorado is considered by many to be the Holy Grail of lost mines and buried treasures for the United States. It has been argued that more lost gold and silver mines, caches of outlaw loot, and long-hidden hoards of Spanish and French treasures exist in Colorado than any other state. The incredible number of tantalizing folktales, legends, and stories of lost and buried wealth that have come out of that state certainly support that claim.

Jameson presents 27 intriguing, mysterious and compelling stories of lost gold and silver mines, hidden strongboxes, missing army payrolls, and Spanish loot. In many ways the tales themselves are like the treasure they describe. Culturally speaking, they represent a portion of the wealth of the people of Colorado lore and legends handed down through the generations. They are an important part of the cultural fabric of the state.

$13.97! is the low, low price...

... for this monumental archive of information! You will walk where they walked, and see what they saw ... it will enable you to put together the facts with legend, trace it out on the maps, and secure YOUR chances of solving some of Colorado's mysteries!

8. Additional Resources For Our Highlighted Books
    Resource 1:
Treasure in the San Luis Valley: The Golden Horde, part II
    ~ Synopsis by Leanne Boyd

The article's author, Christopher O'Brien, cautions: "Search these vast areas hard and deep enough and you may be surprised at what you'll find, but I suggest you tread lightly ..." This writing is cram-packed with the stories of the San Luis Valley, from the relationships of French and Indians and ill-fated groups from every point of the compass. Stories of caves and skeletons, sabotage and mayhem. Treasures found and lost, re-found and then lost again.

O'Brien goes into Colorado's rather unique laws on ''treasure rights'' and then asks the reader: ''Colorado has an interesting series of 'treasure rights,' which can be obtained for the right to look, find and keep treasure found in specific deeded locations. I couldn't help but wonder, who owned the treasure rights for the area around the Dead Man's Treasure?''

One of the most alluring portions of this article is the extensive list of ''potentials'' ... the areas that history, legend, and lore attribute with the spine-tinglers of Colorado Gold Days. Don't miss these lists ... from Huerfano/Spanish Peaks region, to the southern, New Mexican part of the San Luis Valley, to the central and northern San Luis Valley. The author calls this region, ''The Mysterious Valley.'' Being from Colorado, myself, I tend to agree. Many visits throughout my lifetime mostly to the Great Sand Dunes, that great sand pile vacation for kids! have born out the fact that the entire valley is so steeped in the legends, it is palpable and vibrant ... there are whispers on every small rush of the wind ...

Read the rest of this gripping article ... (click here)

---

For this review, I listed Part II of The Golden Horde article FIRST, as it is so specific to the topics of Spanish gold, lost mines, and lost treasures of the San Luis Valley. However, Part I also has some major clues and discussion ... much having to do with the centuries of mystery that many have attributed, in modern days ... to alien visitation. O'Brien states:

''Blessed (or cursed?) with a life-long fascination with the so-called 'thrill of discovery,' I too, have always been enamored by the thought of finding treasure of any kind. Many of you, I'm sure, can relate to this. I confess, it doesn't matter if it's precious stones, Native American artifacts, gem-quality vertebrae fossils, meteorites or precious minerals, I have always been fascinated by the concept of discovering the many fabulous treasures contained on our planet. When this amateur fossil-hunter and wannabe prospector moved out West from the East Coast in 1989, little did he know he was moving to one of this country's legendary treasure locales.''

Full Listing of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico
    ~ Synopsis by Leanne Boyd

If you are looking for a real meat-and-potatoes listing of Colorado and New Mexico mountains, this IS the source. I use this site a lot, just in general research of mines, maps, and towns of yesteryear. They have a broad selection that includes the State Parks, the Wildlife areas, and Colorado's 100 highest mountains. This OF COURSE includes ANY mining or lost-treasure area you are researching. The relief maps section for both Colorado and New Mexico are particularly interesting to me ... sometimes you can tie together bits of a story, with actual topography on the map.

This site can keep you busy for hours. If you are researching anything from the northern Colorado ranges, to the Four-Corners area, this particular section of sangres.com has major info for you. The breakdown by not only county, but by particular locations (cities, passes, wonders of nature, even a golf course or two!) is infinitely helpful in knitting together things mentioned in stories and lore.

For the serious researcher of mines and lost treasure in the San Luis Valley, don't miss this valuable resource!

9. And, Our Classic Book On This Issue's Topics Is A MUST-READ!!
    (Adventure Book 4)
ATLAS OF COLORADO GHOST TOWNS, VOL. I ... By Leanne M. (Carson) Boyd and H. Glenn Carson. Alphabetically the first 31 of 63 counties in Colorado. Extra detailed mappings. Ghost towners, 4 wheeling people will find this atlas a complete and indispensable guide. 134 pages, 8 x 11. Paper.

From the Foreword: Colorado's ghost towns are to be found throughout the state, in diverse areas. Most are abandoned sites, but many are built over by new activity... Often one town out of a dozen barely survived... For whatever reasons, well over 2,000 Colorado towns and hamlets came into being, then after a time lost their reason for being.

It becomes a real adventure merely trying to see the full extent of a long-abandoned place ... a dot on a map, a few words; these cannot tell you as much as your actually standing on the spot. Even so, usually the dwellings, the people, and the activity are only, at best, small whispers in your imagination. A few foundations, scattered shards and cans, some weathered boards, and other such remnants speak, but only if one looks and listens most attentively.

Can one not feel an electric twinge of interest, thinking about the French gold... nuggets, as big as hen's eggs... Is there no sense of adventure felt in the possibility of kicking up a Prince Albert can full of old gold and silver coins, or a sealed lard-bucket, heavy with high-grade ore, in the wreckage of one of those old camps?

This book has been archived by the National Geographic Society, as a work ''of historical importance.'' Colorado, the place of my birth, is a tangled, knotted little string of remembrances and occurences that sum up most of my life. Many of the places mentioned in this book wander, half-forgotten, in my mind, from summer trips into the backwoods of the Colorado mountains. They never were a reality until I became involved in working on this book.

I invite you to take a deep, detailed look into the high roads and hidden nooks of Colorado. What an adventure!

We are VERY careful with your info! As you read through these, please notice that we don't publish, nor do we WANT, any details that would put YOUR adventure in jeopardy! The purpose of running this column is to share our common (and NOT so common!) experiences ... and our kudos and wins and high-rollin' treasure times! This is a place where you can share a little, question a little ... and even vent a little!

Click on, and get ready to have some fun...

13. OUR FAMOUS INFAMOUS QUOTE OF THE MONTH
(Ahh! To Live In Infamy! Gotta LOVE Those Black Sheep!)

*** Unbelievably BAAADD Booty Story ***

A pirate ship landed on an island in search of treasure. The captain and first mate, carrying a map, followed a trail into a swamp.

They were up to their knees when the captain bumped his shin on something hard. Reaching down, he pulled up a trunk. Inside, they found gold beyond their wildest dreams.

Said the captain, "Arrrrgh! Matey! That just goes to show ye:

BOOTY IS ONLY SHIN DEEP !"

oooo, Now That's Really Bad!!!
