THE TREASURE HUNTER'S
NEWSLETTER
Issue No. 4 April 2003 An Announcement And An Invitation -- What Is An E-Book? Come And Get It! At Our (Believe It Or Not)
GRAND
OPENING!!!
-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunny greetings from New
Mexico!
I am hoping that all of you are beginning to
see signs of spring and warmth, as we are here in the High Plains of New
Mexico (and western Texas)!
A thought for today
:-))
"THing is perhaps the greatest
hobby to become a pleasant reality
in years. It is one of the
good things to come out of the electronic
age, perhaps counteracting some
of the feeling of becoming a mere
data symbol within an unfeeling,
uncaring, computerized, and
increasingly regimented society.
The hobby is a great release for
tensions built up in the
hyperactive lives all too many of us lead."
~ from TH'ing, A
Modern Search For Adventure, by Glenn Carson
This "issue" of the Waybill Gazette is a bit
off the beaten track that I've attempted to set with our Ezine. This is
going to be short and sweet, as it is more of an announcement and an
invitation, than a newsletter.
As of the past few days, I have finally come
to a point, after almost ONE YEAR of constructing the Waybill site, where
I can truly say:
"GRAND OPENING! We are
NOW open for Biz!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, the Internet provides a very
strange and unique work environment ...
... in that your business doors are NEVER
closed ... nope, not even **before** you open the doors for business! The
search engines have a way of picking up on a well-constructed site,
listing it, and therefore sending along many visitors. I truly thank all
of you who've watched so patiently as this was being built! (And boy! We
"ain't done yet!" I can see E-Books stretching to the Moon, quite
frankly!)
This is an open invitation to come to
WaybillToAdventure (http://www.waybilltoadventure.com) and take a look at what has gone on since the last
time you visited!
Content is in place, with a WHOLE lot of new
readings for you to ponder. I've added some really nifty "tools" for you
to use while browsing through our site. One of them is the Waybill
Reminder Tool. This handy little gadget will allow you to take notes and
make reminders for yourself, for things you want to do and view, when you
return again. I've already put it to good use, by making notes for coding
things to do, and ideas I have for articles while searching and working on
Waybill.
I have a wonderful surprise for
you, as well. Many of you have written, asking about the digital
book line, and just WHAT will they contain. In broader terms, many have
asked: "WHAT is an E-Book?" So, for about a month, I've been working on a
E-Book that will tell you everything you'd like to know (at least I hope
so :-))
The article starts out this way (for those of
you who are convinced that I despise print books and am totally slamdunked
in the electronic world):
"Paper books are not going away,
anywhere in the near future!
The touch and feel of a print
book, the smell of new ink when you
open the covers the book's
longevity and history are in our souls."
This E-Book is for you to download at no
cost, and it's well worth your time, as it's full of information and
resources about digital books. It is offered as one of the articles on our
Home Page as well, but you can also download the PDF E-Book!
This, along with the book I am working on
(promised to you in Issue 3 of the Gazette) on Alamosa County, and it's
based on one of the chapters in our print book, "Atlas of Colorado Ghost
Towns, Vol. I" ... as well as finishing up Big Bucks In Treasure Hunting,
Vol. 101 ... I am also half way through writing and constructing Vol. 102,
on Maps, Research, and Treasure Hunting. Oh, yeh, and am continuing with
two of our regular line, which are getting close to completion -- Cache
Hunting I, and Guide to Treasure In Colorado. (See the end of this letter,
for links to more info).
Lastly, I've begun construction, editing, and
writing on the E-Book for "Treasure Hunting: A Modern Search For
Adventure." Come read the article on this book! You can read this, here:
http://www.waybilltoadventure.com/index2.html#modernsearch
So, it's been a highly busy March-to-April,
2003, fit for the March Hare and the Mad Hatter! But, with all this new
content looming right ahead, get ready for some fine times in Treasure
reading!
What's in the issue, I hear you asking :-)
... A backward glance at San Luis Valley (boy! I have a hard time leaving
that area of the country ;-), and A Recipe For Treasure Hunting Success.
Also, some tips on hobbies and business, a 'funny' or two, and a couple of
great, useful downloads.
Hoping your April Adventures are beyond your
wildest dreams!

-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- San Luis Valley, Colorado - ONE MORE
TIME!
One terrific resource that didn't get
included in last month's Gazette, I find totally fascinating. The Old
Spanish Trail Association Web Site, at http://www.slv.org/history/osta/index.html, has a wealth of information on the area and history of
westward movement, Spanish Gold, the settling of areas along the Trail
(including the SL Valley) ... and has a TON of links and resources. It's
worth traipsing back over last month's newsletter, or at least taking
another glance at this info. This site has a very nice slide presentation,
giving routes, locations and events ... all are a wonderful place to start
if you are researching these topics. They also have a Links page and a
book list that will give you a very solid basis for researching the
potentials of the area.
Treasure Hunting Tip:
Associations such as The Old Spanish Trail are not only a wealth of
information in books, museums, events, and the like -- but consider
actually joining your favorite associations. The networking value alone,
is worth the (usually) reasonable yearly membership fee. Where else can
you find others of like mind, as well as the associations that these new
friends and acquaintances bring?
Your next co-venture could easily arise out
of a membership gathering, over a cuppa mocha and an abundance of
knowledge and fine ideas, which ALWAYS happens when folks seriously
devoted to the same topics get together. Professional organizations
have a way of lending one very important factor to your interests and
hobbies .... the layer of PROFESSIONALISM!
If you are looking for ways to take your
treasure hunting hobby to a new and elevated status ... the associations
are an invaluable step toward doing just that!

-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DID YOU KNOW?
That ... stolen loot is believed to be buried
behind the remains of the thieves cabin, somewhere near the junction of
Alamosa Creek and the Rio Grande? You can read about this, and much more
in
A Guide To Treasure In Colorado. Take a look at this MAP... (http://www.waybilltoadventure.com/index2.html#coloradotreasure) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Recipe For Treasure Hunting
Success
~ by Leanne Boyd
Ingredients:
1 great idea (can use more than one, but one at a time is enough) 1 focused vision 1 growing TH'ing Tool Kit 99 yards of Perserverence 10 lbs. firmness 1 ton flexibility 1 belief in self 1 big smile You already have the desire to
build a SUCCESSFUL treasure hunting program. Do you also have the
drive that will make it happen? Remind yourself every time you get
discouraged of your goal, and the fact that once you achieve it,
everything will be worth it.
You will have to mix in some
stubborness very often, both toward those who will downplay or
even belittle your efforts -- and your **biggest** critic, who will be
YOU!
Give yourself a reasonable
amount of time to accomplish this building of your TH'ing
program! It took centuries to "get lost" and it will take you some time to
FIND IT. If 90% of all wannabe TH'ers give up in the first 90
days-to-one-year, that should tell you that they did not give themselves a
reasonable enough amount of time to get there!
You've all heard it before
-- many would like to find the Mother Lode, the Grandfather of
All Stolen Booty, the Billion-Dollar buried inheritance -- and give up
their day job! Come on, now. This is a business just like any other, and
it all takes TIME!
It takes a "brick and mortar"
business about 5 years to get to a profit mode ... and it will
take you some time to refine your skills and begin being profitable in
your digs and finds ... so be reasonable with your expectations and you
**can** make it happen! I would say give it at least one year, to be sure
you are dedicated and able to do it.
Perserverence will be a full
time job when you first start building your treasure hunting
business. The old saying that "Practice makes perfect" is only good if you
are "doing it" correctly when you practice! That is why we here at Waybill
STRESS the importance of properly researching your projects, and getting
out with your detector as much as possible.
But the bottom line is -- if you
really want to make it, and believe in yourself -- and DO NOT GIVE UP,
then you WILL make it!
You will have to be firm but
still flexible. You need to focus on your goals, keep working at
your detector skills, mapping knowledge, trends and tendencies in the
markets (gold, coins, collectibles, etc.) but be ready to try new things
or different versions of old things -- until you hit on the perfect and
unique formula for YOU!
That's the time you dive
in and work it like **nothing else you have ever done.**
BIG TIP: Once you see
that you are nearing your goal, do not allow yourself to slack off and
lose ground. Many tend to sigh a deep sigh, and roll back to gloat a bit.
No, no, no! Keep at it like a dog on his favorite
bone!
Now, if you take these ingredients
and shake 'em up in a blender, who knows what the end product will
be?
Just remember to fold gently
and mix well. Take your time with it, and enjoy the aroma of
ongoing success as it rises to the perfect peak, like a well-baked cake.
You will BE a success. Just believe in yourself and instead of saying
"Maybe I can do this," just remind yourself that you WILL!
You have all the ingredients!
Enjoy!

Legalese,
And The Legacy We Are Leaving Our
Kids
From the title, I'm betting you can see that
I firmly straddle the top of the fence on this one! First of all, most of
us respond deeply to the ever-increasing crunch of legislation. I, for
one, run screaming into the hallways, DON'T HEM ME IN! But -- even
primitive tribes have all had rules and ethics they lived by. If we are
conscientious in our hobby, our passions, most likely we can continue
doing what we love ... but this issue has become a true concern for
me.
Are the days of unfettered
treasure hunting gone? There are some who would say yes. In my
research (YES! There is a new book coming up!!) ... I have run into some
very good articles. Rather than try to shorten the effect of the writings,
I invite you to simply visit these links. I would appreciate any reader
response on these topics! There is much to read, and to KNOW ... if we are
to preserve both our love of TH'ing and the outdoors ... and the quality
of this terra firma for all generations to come.

-----===[[]]===----- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The National Economy, Your Latest
Corporate Layoff, Job Woes,
And I'll Say It Again: There Is Great
Beauty In TRASH TO TREASURE!!!
I know. You've figured this out already -- I
am a great believer in the do-it-yourself mode. AND the fact that there
are a 1001 Ways out there, to create your own comfort zone in this
increasingly distracted and distracTIVE world! I am also sold on a few
offerings of the Internet. WHY? Because I've proven to myself that they
truly work. How does this fit with Treasure Hunting?
Have you recently gone into a thrift store,
and come out with a hand-beveled and frosted mirror, circa 1890s, worth
probably several hundred dollars or more in an antique store? And did you
pay $6.50 for it?? That happened to me, just before leaving Kansas City.
IF I were of a mind to sell this, would I head to the local antique
store?
Nope.
I would head to eBay!!!!!!!!!!!!
The more I study this, the more I participate
... and yes, it takes some time to get going with it ... how is this a
lick different? Digging up a can of old silver coins ... and ferreting a
dusty old mirror out of a back shelf in a mission thrift shop that many
folks would be afraid to enter the place, to start with? IT IS ALL
TREASURE HUNTING. And the rewards are very similar, and very often the
amounts "earned" are just as high, whether it is old
mirrors or old silver coins. They are all old and they are all
valuable. And they are all TRASH until you or I find them and manage to
turn them into TREASURE!!!
And the place where the REAL DEALS are being
made -- are -- ONLINE.
Here are two invaluable resources. One is the
book I suggested last month, and I hold firm, THIS is probably the
quickest shortcut to coming up to speed, in the world. The author has
become one of my Net Gurus. Take it or leave it ... but at this price? How
can you lose?
For those of you who are experiencing JOB
WOES (and who isn't, these days?), here is a good one to take a look at.
"Lost a job recently? There's a
life preserver floating out there that wasn't
around in the last recession a
decade ago: eBay, the online electronic
marketplace... The recent
economic shocks -- from the tech bubble burst
and the Sept. 11 terrorist
attack to corporate scandals and the market's
decline -- have boosted the
national unemployment rate to a stubborn 6%.
Some jobless workers, and others
who don't show up in the statistics, are
getting by -- or even getting
ahead -- by selling on eBay and other online
marketplace services." ~ article

THANKS TO

Please visit the Department of Defense web page below and sign in thanking the men and women of the U.S. military services for defending our freedom. The compiled list of names will be sent out to our soldiers at the end of the month. So far, there are only about 3,625,306 million names. What a shame. National Military Appreciation Month (March). ....
"Each day people actually walk
over lost or hidden remnants of the past,
real treasures great and small,
and seldom do any of those people, ever

the April issue of the Waybill To Adventure Gazette! My wish for you is
that you wake every morning LOVING what you do, as much as I love what I
do!
Oh, I almost forgot! There was no writing by
Glenn Carson this month, as he is BUSY BUSY BUSY!!! This is wonderful news
-- but he has been hard at work with the printers. No sooner did we get
Big Bucks In Treasure Hunting Vol. 101 out in E-Book format, then there
was great response for a PRINT version! More news later, as this develops,
but roughly speaking, the print version will be out in about 4 weeks.
There will also be a version on CD, that can be mailed to your
home. I will be sending special notice as this develops. And we thank
you for your purchases, and for your wonderful comments on the
E-Book!
Have a wonderful Easter season, or Spring
