DO THESE THINGS REALLY HAPPEN?
TAKE A LOOK AT THE DOCUMENTATION
BEHIND THE PEGLEG TALE!!
1. First and foremost, read the fascinating account of the...
"Manuscript from . . .
The Man Who Found Pegleg's Black Gold "It is time, once and for all, to end the mystery, the
speculation, and the controversy. Almost 10 years ago I found what has been known since 1852 as the "burned black gold of the Peg Leg." Without pinpointing the discovery on a map for reasons that are obvious, I will say only that it is less than 30 miles from the Salton Sea and within the confines of the map on page 10 of the November 1946 issue of Desert Magazine. "I've gone back to the location an average of twice a year
since the first discovery, and, according to my records, I've brought out and sold a total of $314,650 worth of Peg Leg's black gold nuggets. This amount is not the "millions" usually associated with lost mines and treasures, but it is a fortune to me. The money has been wisely and quietly invested. Within a year after first discovering the gold, I retired from the work I was doing and have been enjoying life ever since..." Read the rest of this at:
And also an article by Cactus Jim, concerning the letter
he received from "The Man Who Found Peg Leg's Black Gold": http://www.desertusa.com/magdec97/gold/pegleg.html -----===(o)===----- 2. Be sure to check out some of the documentation online:
"It is said that more men have sought Pegleg's black
nuggets than any other lost mine. There are multiple versions of the Pegleg legend as well as other stories of black nuggets that seem to correlate with some of the facts stated in Pegleg lore. "Pegleg Smith was a rugged mountain man who traded furs
and
supplies, rustled horses and trapped beaver. Pegleg, also known as Thomas Smith, lost his leg to an arrow during a trapping expedition in the fall of 1827. After his leg was amputated, his friends fashioned him a wooden leg, thus earning him the name Pegleg..." Read the rest of this at:

3. Just what IS this black coating on the gold?
"The gold nuggets were coated with a black varnish which
may have been created from the oxidation of copper. DesertUSA's article on desert varnish may provide additional information on why the nuggets contained a black coating..." "There are three Indian legends of black-coated gold in
the desert that support Pegleg's legend. The Apache Indians spoke of a place in the desert where the ground was littered with gold nuggets. It was against the tribal law and beliefs of the Apaches to tell others where the gold was located. Because of their superstitions, their secret remained well kept..." Read the rest of this at:
"I later learned that the so called black desert varnish
or coating on the nuggets was simply copper oxide. Most gold found in its native state, particularly in California, is usually alloyed with silver, which averages 10 to 20 percent. The Peg Leg black nuggets contain about 70 percent gold, 20 percent silver, and 10 percent copper. It was the copper molecules that oxidized and gave the nuggets their black color." This is great stuff! Read more:

4. Interestingly enough, there are many accounts that
claim they've not only discovered Pegleg's gold, and have taken gold out... but that there is MORE there. "I'm sure there are more nuggets underground, probably
great quantities of them along the ancient watercourse into which they were washed ages ago. They may be anywhere from four feet to thousands of feet underground, or wherever the twisting and faulting of the earth's crust has exposed or buried them. There may even be other places where they can be found on the surface as I found them on Peg Leg Hill and the mound, and they may be miles away..."
-----===(o)===-----
5. Yes, the legend is rich. And if we believe the
accounts, so are some people out there! "He happened to pick up a rock and noticed its usual
weight given its size. He scraped the coating off, and low and behold it was gold. To make a long story short, he had them analyzed and they were approximately 70 percent gold and 30 percent copper. The copper had oxidized and turned the nuggets black. He gathered all of the nuggets from the area above ground and even used a metal detector to find any that might have been buried. He slowly sold them in Alaska so as not to draw attention to himself or the area..." Read more at:

which may be located in several areas, take I-10 west of Blythe and turn south on Wiley's Well Road. Drive south to Thumb Butte, a prominent landmark, where Pegleg most likely found his nuggets. Another area where Pegleg may have found gold nuggets is located near Chuckwalla Springs, which can be reached by driving west of Blythe on I-10 toward Indio, turning south on Chuckwalla Springs Road and driving to the road's end, where, supposedly, Pegleg found his black nuggets near three black buttes..." 7. Do/did these things happen ONLY in the good ol' U.S. of A.?
In my research, I ran into this bit of info, and it turned out to be a really interesting read, concerning the Gold "Rush" in Australia. Download here and take a look. This only mentions a Pegleg Gully... but in the fashion of naming things after the occurences, I am sure there was a "digger" named Pegleg. The insight into Australia's Gold days is mighty interesting! Be sure to right-click and save to your PC. [PDF] 150 Years of Gold
http://snipurl.com/AU_150_yrs_gold And by the way, for those who might like to know some of
my research methods, I use Google almost exclusively, and the keywords I used were: "pegleg gold australia pdf." This was based on 'losing' my bookmark and thus the page, so I had to go back in memory to figger out where I'd been!

8. You might want to take a look at a map of the area.
